painting Beside Painting Itself is a project that manifests the literal and ideological slippage of painting. Each individual painting in the series is a revision, reappropriation, representation, and reenactment of the others. Through deconstruction, paintings generate subsequent paintings as reconstructions, simultaneously filtering and exaggeratedly expanding constituent elements and ideas of painting. As each painting confronts presuppositions and expectations set up by the similarities and repetitions in other works of the set, the transitive relationships between these works obliquely illuminate aspects of painting’s ontology, the question of what painting is like, and its state within a world larger than their set. painting Beside Painting Itself is ultimately a project that creates paintings to understand Painting, fully realized through juxtapositions in the installation of the entire body of paintings.
